TRANSGENDER MEANINGS IN UKRAINIAN LYRICS: LEVEL ZERO (gender and psychological aspects)

Abstract

The article elaborates on the specificity of transgender meaning’s art representation in the Ukrainian poetry of the 20th century. Transgender meanings were «invisible» in the national literature for a long time when sexuality had been displaced in the culture. The main task of this paper is studying the peculiarities of transgender meaning’s implementation in Ukrainian lyrics. There aren’t clear methodological strategies of literary queer-studies according to the national cultural tradition yet. Not an author’s personality (and sexuality) but a type of writing, modes and marks of homoerotic desire’s explication in lyrics all must be investigated. The psychological researches of masculine/feminine/transgender sexualities are also used. The research novelty consists of elaboration on a) two main modes of transgender meaning’s art representation in lyrics (1) lyric hero reflects his/her own queer experience; 2) lyric hero reflects the Other’s queer identity); b) the specificity of homoerotic desire’s explication in lyrics according to masculine/feminine strategies of writing. The gender and psychological peculiarities of lyric hero’s own homoerotic desire in some poems by Agatangel Krymsky (col. Palm Branches) and Oles Barlig (col. The Pleasure of Imaginary Dearth) are considered. They are quite different: in Krymsky’s poems the Platonic tradition of intimacy between the older man and the younger one is restored; in Barlig’s poems lyric hero’s sexuality forms by junior’s homosexual games. The specificity of the Other’s queer identity’s lyric reflection depends on cultural ideology in poems-mystification by E. Andijevska, and some poems by S. Zhadan, I. Malkovich, I. Shuvalova.
