MEETINGS AND FAREWELLS OF G. KOSTIUK: TRAGIC TRUTH OR OUTSIDE THE «SOVIET»

Abstract

The end of the twentieth century was characterized by a new wave of Ukrainian cultural revival and dictated by the dramatic dynamics of the life of the Ukrainian nation and the urgent need to rethink national history. Therefore, the memoirs of the well-known Ukrainian literary critic and public figure, G. Kostiuk (1902–2002), who left in emigration, are included in the field of view of scientists. Meetings and farewells is a two-volume book of memoirs, which today should be viewed not only as a kind of documentary prose or «literature of fact» but as a fundamental work on the history of Ukrainian literature, a powerful literary source containing truthful information about individuals, events, lives, banned by the totalitarian Soviet system and as a possibility for promulgation outside the «Soviet» Ukraine, in the diaspora. Now, we have a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the truthfully reproduced (though subjectively) picture of not only literary, but also social, political, historical processes of our country. Memories of the literary critic in emigration is a documentary source, covering the 1920–1980s. In the first volume of memoirs, G. Kostiuk describes events, figures, and the specific features of the cultural and socio-political life of the 1920s and 1930s. Last century, which gives grounds for an even deeper awareness of the complexity of this period for the Ukrainian nation. The second book of memoirs is devoted to the diaspora period of life (Germany, USA, France) criticism (40–80s of the XX century). In particular, G. Kostiuk recalls the Ukrainian intelligentsia, which perigee was difficult times in emigration. Therefore, historically the literary significance and scale of the memoirs of «Meetings and farewells» are indisputable and priceless for modern Ukrainian science.
