THE PHENOMENON OF BORDERLINE/MARGIN IN SHANTARAM BY G. D. ROBERTS
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2017, Vol 301, Issue 289
Abstract
The article deals with the phenomenon of borderline/margin in the famous novel written by G. D. Roberts. The study showed that the phenomenon of borderline/margin is represented in this text in different ways. Important roles are played by the real geographical borders of different countries, where the main character travels (such as India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc), territorial margins within India itself (states of India, the space of the city vs the space of the village), and territorial margins within the city of Bombay (city districts, the margins of the tourist locations, forbidden territories (slave market, lepers’ camp, slums), the margins of criminal influence). Quite often languages (English, French, German, Arabic, Marathi, and Hindi) become an effective means of crossing the borderlines between territories. Moreover, the phenomenon of borderline/margin in the novel is analyzed on the cultural, psychological, and social level. The limits of physical abilities and the cross line between the reality and the dream as well as their representations are also important for the proper understanding of the text. Extra attention is given to the moral borderlines and to the problems connected with their change and crossing. On the linguistic level, the importance of the phenomenon of borderline/margin is stressed by the intensive use of words and set expressions associated with it such as border/line/side/edge/wall/margin.
