THE SENSE OF BORDERS IN THE SHORT STORY OF LEONID MOSENDZ

Abstract

This article explores the boundaries, the limits as a concepts of reality in the small prose of Leonid Mosendz. The relevance of reception is defined by special aesthetics of vistnykism and some non-textual factors. This research is dictated by the need for further sustained interest in contemporary literary criticism, partly discussed question in particular, and extraordinary Mosend`s creativity as a whole. Only indirectly this research deals with writings of I. Nabytovych, O. Bagan, V. Prosalova, I. Rusnak, O. Omelchuk and others. The examples of functioning geopolitical, national, and cultural aesthetic boundaries are analyzed in the context of general philosophical views and vistnykism discourse in particular. Two short stories collections of such genre are under consideration: Homo lenis (1937) and Revenge (1939). A problem is also raised in the linguistic plane, due to the traced strategy of including the borrowed words in the text. The intellectual level and the level of linguistic competence of a sender and recipients are analyzed. A powerful impact on the aesthetics of the works of nationalist ideology is traced, including the views of Dontsov, the author of a number of fundamental works and long standing chief editor of vistnykivtsi. Mosendz’s work is perceived as a part of the cultural field, ideological norms of which provoke conquering certain conceptual limits, and boundaries that prevent the development of the nation. This article indicates that Mosendz’s short story in terms of its educational mission underlines appropriate boundaries that are crucial for the reader as a social entity.
