THE BORDER-AREA AS A WRITER’S IDENTITY FORMING FACTOR IN THE WORKS OF INGEBORG BACHMANN AND PETER HANDKE
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2018, Vol 316, Issue 304
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the problem of borders in literary works. Two Austrian writers Ingeborg Bachmann and Peter Handke both came from the border region of Austria Carinthia, which lies at the crossroads of three countries – Austria, Italy and Slovenia – and thus at the crossroads of three languages and cultures. The aim of the article is to show, that geographical borders or the living on the border cause a specific worldview, which forms the philosophical and aesthetic position of authors. The first difficulty for the study of this subject is the lack of common terminology in Ukrainian to describe a border. As the article has shown, there are more than five different terms used to describe this phenomenon. The system approach is applied to define the term border and to study the connection between the author‟s identity and their origin from the border area (cultural approach, postcolonialism, identity theory). The author of the article defines the border as the third space, which forms the self-identity of the writers and has an ontological meaning. To distinguish this meaning from the general meaning of border the term border-area (pomezhivja) is introduced. Both I. Bachmann and P. Handke, authors, whose identities can be defined as multiple ones, live and work on the limits, trying to cross the borders, both geographical and mental. This is expressed in the topics they use for their works and their public appearance and personal life. In addition, the concept of the border area is defined as an ontological factor in the life and work of both authors.
