Interpretation of the Qur’ān through Qur’ān in Al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr
Journal Title: رهیافتهایی در علوم قرآن و حدیث - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 90
Abstract
Most of the interpreters have taken into consideration the attesting to another āya by verbal preference in the interpretation of that āya in their books, and some of them have relied on context, instead; and all of these are called the interpretation of the Qur’ān through Qur’ān. Rāzī is among the interpreters who have made much use of this type of interpretation in his exegetical book named Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb. This article has addressed this type of interpretation undertaken by Rāzī; and from among various topical interpretations, it has chosen and challenged the topic of iḥbāt (cancellation). So, on one hand, it has pointed out the āyas concerning this topic and touched upon the studies and sayings of various Islamic sects and, on the other hand, has referred to examples of the āyas used for explaining and identifying their intention of other āyas. In the end, it is concluded that Rāzī has not been restricted to a specific exegetical opinion – which he has been restricted to in all instances of repeating the topic – just as he has renounced the traditions narrated on this topic for the sake of defending his own opinion
