Intramedullary nail fixation of ulna and radius fractures

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2010, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Forearm fractures are among the most frequent of all. Fortunately, most of them could be successfully treated with immobilization in cast, followed by physical therapy. Only few of them require surgical intervention. The best method for the treatment of fractures of radius and ulna should offer the shortest time for union and give opportunity for early rehabilitation. In the treatment of forearm fractures, requiring surgical intervention it is difficult to pin-point the best method. Surely, all stable methods of osteosynthesis fulfill the criteria and putting away casts giving the patient a great comfort. In our opinion intramedullary method of fixation is the best option. It allows for closed reduction, which gives lower number of delayed union or non-union. In our opinion intramedullary nail with locking screws fulfill required criteria. In our department we fixed 14 fractures of forearm bones using intramedullary nail. We included patient with new fractures and with non-unions after different methods being implemented. Our results show that intramedullary nail is a promising method for the treatment of forearm bones, especially for fractures within 1/2 of proximal ulna.
