Inventory of lexico-semantic group of English somatic verbs

Abstract
The article deals with the constituents of the lexico-semantic group of somatic verbs in the English language. The research focuses on the constituents of the core and periphery of the subgroups of somatic verbs. The results of the inventory procedure of the subgroups of somatic verbs are presented in this article. The data are obtained with the help of lexicographic sources using quantitative formulae. The analysis is based on the data from different dictionaries. Several dictionaries have been used in order to obtain more reliable results, since the components of meaning can be shown incompletely and inconsistently and the lexical groups obtained do not always correspond to the intuitive representations of the native speakers. The inventory procedure involved three steps: 1) establishing the dominants of the subgroups, 2) forming the source list of verbs which determine the content of the dominant and using the quantitative formulae to determine their weight; 3) categorizing the source list verbs into core, main body, near and far periphery of the subgroups. As a result of the research, the constituents that compose the core, main body, near and far periphery of the lexico-semantic subgroups of somatic verbs are established. The study also reveals characteristic peculiarities of the core and peripheral constituents of the subgroups that are analyzed in the article. The composition of the main body and periphery of the subgroups of somatic verbs reflect tight systemic relations between them. The perspective of the research is the further study of paradigmatic relations of somatic verbs.
