Investigating the Relationship between Social Capital and Mental Health in Urban Areas

Abstract

Social capital provides emotional and psychological support and effectively improves individual health. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between social capital and mental health in urban areas. This was a case study. Documentary and survey techniques were used for data collection. In this study, all participants were assessed using Demographic Information, Social Capital and Mental Health Questionnaires (GHQ-28). Different dimensions of social capital such as trust, social cohesion, social support, social participation had significant relationships with mental health of citizens in Shiraz. The results showed that promotion of social capital as an important factor contributes to satisfaction with life and individual mental health in urban areas.
