Investigation of air-entraining influence on the road concrete strength

Abstract

The article presents experimental data that show how air-entraining affects оn the strength of road concrete. To involve additional air, a chemical additive Sika Mix Plus was used. The studies were carried out on concretes using cements of M500 grades (types CEM I) and M400 (types CEM II/A-S) with different slag contents. It is shown that, regardless of cement grade (types), an increase of the amount of air in the concrete mix leads to concrete strength decrease. The compressive strength of the concrete with increasing air quantity is reduced to a greater extent than the flexural strength. The article gives a possible explanation of this phenomenon. It is based on the fact that the decrease of compressive strength can be explained by the increase the number of defects in the structure of the concrete. First of all the decrease of the flexural strength depends on the quality of the contact zone into which additional air does not enter. It is shown that the strength of concrete on cements containing slag is reduced to a lesser extent than in concrete, on cements without mineral additives. Despite the reduction of strength with an increase in the amount of air, the concrete structure becomes more isotropic.
