Investigation of University Students Attachment Styles according to Sex and Gender Roles

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the attachment styles of universities students according to their sex and gender roles. For this aim, data were collected from continuing to university students (281 female, 164 male, totally 445 students, Mean= 23.75, Sd= 3.59). In order to data collect Bem Sex Role Inventory and Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory are used. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics and chi-square are applied. According to the findings obtained from this study, firstly, it is found that there aren’t difference attachment styles according to university student’s biological sex. Secondly, university students’ attachment styles significantly different according to gender roles. According to this, university students who have feminine gender role have fearful attachment style; those masculine have not only secure but also fearful attachment styles and those androgens have secure attachment style. Finally, students’ attachment styles differ according to sex/gender joint action. According to this finding, those biologically female or male but as gender roles female or masculine have secure and fearful attachment, and those female/male androgens have secure attachment style. Results are discussed in light and interpreted.
