INVESTIGATIONS INTO MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF CORES OF TRANSFORMERS AND INDUCTORS FOR CONVERTRS

Abstract

Over 140 types of inductors and nearly 30 types of transformers were developed at the Department of Electric Traction of the Electrotechnical Institute. They usually operate at frequencies many times higher than 50 Hz, at non-sinusoidal currents and voltages. This creates particular requirements versus magnetic cores. Information provided by manufacturers of magnetic materials do not suffice to design the discussed equipment in an optimal way, the more so that the properties of cores may differ significantly from the properties of materials. For that reason systematic investigations of the cores and magnetic materials applied are conducted at the Department. The paper discusses typical variations of currents and voltages and then the kinds of special investigations carried out with reference to their applications. Exemplary results of measurements performed at the laboratory of the Institute are also given.
