Irritability in Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health - Year 2019, Vol 26, Issue 2
Abstract
Objectives: Severe and chronic irritability, which causes impaired functionality, often leads children and adolescents to apply to psychiatry clinics. Irritability is associated with many childhood psychiatric disorders; however, it is particularly one of the diagnostic criteria of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). The aim of this review is to evaluate the studies which provide the developmental mechanisms of irritability in DMDD and which show the differences of irritability in different psychiatric disorders. Materials and Methods: “Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder” and “irritability” key words were used to determine relevant studies for review and total of 59 articles in Turkish and English language were included. Results: Studies showed that the irritability characteristics of children with DMDD were different from those with other psychiatric disorders and it has been shown that children perceive neutral facial expressions even as threatening. Conclusion: It is essential to determine whether irritability is chronic or not while assessing irritability. Explaining the characteristics of irritability specific to a case is important for diagnosis and treatment.
