Preventing the Psychological and Developmental Outcomes of Child Maltreatment

Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health - Year 2020, Vol 27, Issue 1

Abstract

This study aims to illustrate the long-term effects of maltreatment during childhood and to provide a comprehensive picture of the predictors of this significant problem. The reflections of child maltreatment in Turkey and in the world regarding the children’s daily life can be very subversive. The most fundamental element that makes the issues of abuse and neglect striking is that they are exploiting healthy development and hindering children’s rights. Abuse and neglect occur concerning several preventable individual, familial, and societal causes. Beyond the immediate and dramatic effects on the children’s mental and physical health, all kinds of maltreatment may also cause a long-term decline in the healthy functioning of the child. Intervening in the effects of maltreatment on the child at an early period by considering children’s socio-cultural ecology may prevent the developmental course of the problems. There is a short discussion on the implications of avoiding adverse outcomes of maltreatment on child victim’s long-term psychological well-being.
