Is Total Sialic Acid A Marker For Stroke ?

Abstract
Background : The objective of our study is to investigate the changes in the serum total sialic acid in patients with stroke. Materials and Methods: 116 patients (62 female and 54 males) with acute ischemic cerebral vascular disease and 90 healthy volunteers (49 female and 41 males) were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were drawn from venous cutters from patients and controls within the first 24 hours and from patients on the 5 day following the onset of stroke. Serum sialic acid levels were measured by Warren method. The infarct size was determined based on the results of Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Cranial Computerized Tomography. Results: 5th day total sialic acid levels of patients were higher than the control group ( p<0.01 ). 5th day total sialic acid levels were higher than 1st day total sialic acid levels in patients ( p<0.01 ). When the total sialic acid levels of patients were compared to the prognoses, 1st day total sialic acid levels in patients in the poor prognose group were significantly higher than the good prognose group ( p<0.01 ). Although 5th day total sialic acid levels of patients were slightly increased in the poor prognose group, these differences did not reach a significant value ( p>0.05 ). Conclusion: Our data have suggested that increased total sialic acid levels may be a result from increased sialidase activity, which causes an excessive release of sialic acid from different compounds or from increased acute phase proteins during inflammation. Poor prognose may be associated with increased total sialic acid levels. Further studies are necessary to determine whether total sialic acid is a marker or not for stroke.
