Isolation, Identification and Antibiogram Study of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa from Cattle in Bangladesh

Abstract

This study was aimed to isolate and identify Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and to check the susceptibility of isolated P. aeruginosa against some common usable antibiotics. Two isolates of P. aeruginosa were isolated from the abscesses of two cattle using nutrient agar and MacConkey agar. The antibiotic sensitivity test of both the isolates of P. aeruginosa was performed by disc diffusion methods. The isolated P. aeruginosa produces characteristics colonies in nutrient agar but did not produce any pigments. Both isolates produce β-hemolysis on blood agar and grew on MacConkey agar. In Gram’s staining, the morphology of isolated P. aeruginosa showed Gram-negative, pink colored, medium rod shaped appearance. Both the isolated P. aeruginosa were found to be motile. In sugar fermentation test, both the isolates fermented dextrose with the production of both acid and gas but did not ferment lactose and sucrose. Among the 10 antibiotics tested, the highest resistance was found with Ampicillin and Oxytetracycline followed by Tetracycline and Amoxicillin, intermediately sensitive to Kanamycin, Erythromycin, Gentamicin and Sulphomethoxazole, highly sensitive to Chloramphenicol and Ciprofloxacin. From the above results it may be concluded that surface infection of cattle may be invaded by P. aeruginosa and this is the first time isolation of P. aeruginosa from abscesses of cattle in Bangladesh. Our results also revealed that Chloramphenicol and Ciprofloxacin may be the best drug of choice for the treatment of P. aeruginosa infection.
