ISSUES OF ESTABLISHING EUROPEAN IDENTITY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract
The article deals with the current problems of the formation of the common European identity in the European Union. It shows negative trends in the development of the Union through the financial-economic and migration crises, Brexit, the strengthening of right-wing radical parties and movements. Two main directions of the strengthening of European identity are emphasized: via historical heritage and political identity. The role of European citizenshipin this process is highlighted as well. The potential opportunities for strengthening the European identity, which are the formation of the European system of education, creation of conditions for mastering the common language and enhancement of academic mobility of students, are revealed.
