Abstract

Introduction. Gastric and duodenal ulcer disease is a chronic affliction, the process of which leads to limited, deep decline in digestive tract wall. The main symptom of peptic ulcer disease is abdominal pain which may be accompanied by nausea, bloating and vomiting. Helicobacter pylori infection and taking non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs belong to the most frequent causes of gastric and duodenal ulcer disease prevalence. The disease may affect the quality of patients’ live i.e. the physical, psychological, social as well as environmental aspects of life. The possibility of specifying deficits in particular walks of life may prove to be helpful in understanding behaviour and situation of patients stricken with the disease. Aim. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the quality of life of the patients suffering from gastric and duodenal ulcer disease in terms of physical, psychological, social and community life conditions as well as in correlation of above mentioned aspects with social-demographic variables i.e. sex, age, education, place of residence, marital status, employment status, way of residence, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption. Material and methods. The research was carried out in the Surgical Ward, the Internal Diseases Department and the Endoscopy Unit of the Hospital in Lipno. The research of the quality of patients’ lives was conducted by means of diagnostic survey method. There were two research tools applied i.e. WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire and respondent’s particulars which consisted of nine questions concerning general information about the interviewees. Results. The analysis of acquired results proved that the quality of people’s lives who suffer from gastric and duodenal ulcer disease decreased in all the areas. The social walk of life was evaluated at the highest level, whereas the community walk of life was evaluated the lowest. Social area was rated higher than community area. The research concerning correlation of the quality of life with social demographic variables showed that there is statistically significant relation between the self-evaluation of life quality made by patients and the patients’ age, marital status, professional activity, and the whereabouts of the patient. Conclusions. The interviewees evaluated their satisfaction with the quality of life higher than their satisfaction with their health condition. The differences in evaluation of the quality of life in particular fields were observed. The quality of life in social sphere was evaluated as the most precious. Correlation between the quality of life and social-demographic variables such as age, marital status, professional activity, standard of residential place and alcohol consumption was observed among the respondents.
