Abstract

The study highlights the gender equality dimension of corporate social responsibility of Ukrainian banks depicting the European integration progress, adherence to the UN sustainable development goal and core European values. The authors apply retrospective analysis of public statistical data on the gender structure of European financial sector, as well as national banks of the EU member-states and Ukraine. The study is based on gender specific information on the bank’s executive boards retrieved from official Internet-sites of 80 Ukrainian commercial banks. The authors analyze the dynamics of gender equality incorporation in the EU financial system in 2007-2016 pointing out the leaders and outsiders. The study argues the main problems of women engaged in the labor market are work-overload and glass ceiling and suggests key reasons of the glass ceiling limiting the professional opportunities for women. The study reveals endogenous factors of gender-oriented corporate social responsibility of banks and discusses its exogenous dimensions. The paper argues that gender equality in top management in European financial systems has not been achieved in any country. The authors specify that the representation of women in the central banks of the EU member states steadily grew in 2007-2016 with the average value of 16,2 percent. The study discovers that bank’s top management of 80 Ukrainian banks, namely the chairman, executive board members and chief accountant, consists of deeply stereotyped positions – excessive representation of women as chief accountants (88,75 percent, or 71 out of 80) and insufficient representation of women as chairmen of the bank’s executive boards (21.25%, or 17 out of 80). The authors pinpoint that the average share of women among the bank’s executive board members is 45,1 percent, while 52,5 percent of Ukrainian bank’s executive boards have less than 50,0 percent of female members and only 16,25 percent of Ukrainian commercial banks adhere to gender equality as the core European value.
