Abstract
One of the modern concepts of social work is green social work. This paper offers a review of the major literature about the the preconditions for the emergence of green social work as a theoretical direction, the strategies proposed by this theory and their implementation in practice and in the training programmes for social workers. Research is based on systematic analysis of academic literature (67 English-language publications) and 15 documents of international and national organizations. It has been determined that in academic literature the concepts of «green social work» and «ecosocial work» coexist, although they differ little in terms of conceptualization and proposed strategies, since both are aimed at promoting sustainable development and counteracting ecological injustice. It has been found out that in the international social work the ideas of sustainable development and green social work have been in the process of institutionalization since the beginning of 2010. Review identifies how the development of ecology as a social phenomenon took place, how social scientists, practitioners and teachers of social work reacted. The analysis made it possible to distinguish key strategies of practice of social work within the framework of the ecological perspective: proactive and reactive. The paper also reviews experience of introducing green social work themes within University courses. It defines the variety of strategies to do that – from teaching social workers how to behave in the situation of emergencies and disasters to how to support rural population in implementing of green technologies. And finally the paper asks questions whether Ukraine with its ecological problems, human-made disasters, including the armed conflict, and structural inequality can use the tools for community development and building resilience that are proposed by green social work
