JOSE ORTEGA Y GASSET ON THE DEHUMANIZATION OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Abstract

The article analyzes the Ortega’s concept of the nature and essence of the art, which he most fully described in his book "The Dehumanization of Art." The main features of "new art", according to Ortega, is that it does not seek to be clear to all, in principle, wants to remain unpopular, focusing on the elite; avoids transcendence; strives to be only a work of art and nothing else; avoid any imposed outside rules and regulations; not engaged in reproduction of reality, but serves as a kind of game, etc. Contemporary art, in contrast to the previous, differentiates its recipients. This distin ction is obvious, because the overwhelming majority of people cannot understand the novelty. Such a person feels humiliated with new art and therefore despises it. It is here that Ortega adds the reason for the unpopularity of dehumanized art. The new art is designed to meet the aesthetic needs of only a small group of trained people who can decipher those codes and symbols that the artist uses in the process of writing a book. Only the elite can understand the true intentions of the artist
