KINDERGARTENS IN THE EARLY REPUBLICAN PERIOD

Abstract
Pre-schooling period is believed to be the phase in which one gets ready for the life socially and physically. Established from the 19th century and on, the pre-school institutions in USA and some other European countries also used to aim getting children ready for the school and the life. Kindergartens in Ottoman Empire, on the other hand, were formed in 1913 so as to be the first stage of the elementary schools. Shortly after their establishment, these schools were a growing body, and continued with their actions after the proclamation of the republic in the year 1923. However, in the first years of the republic, shortages of buildings and funds caused some trouble in the elementary schooling. To solve this problem, it was decided that the kindergartens were to be merged with the elementary schools, that is, to be put aside. In this study, the kindergartens in the early republican period are reviewed; the phases they went throughout the period beginning with the proclamation of the republic and ending with their closure process in 1926 are considered.
