Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by chronic, progressive, degenerative change in the macula leading to central visual impairment in older people. AMD has a great impact on patient's quality of life that is comparable with some of the serious chronic diseases. A cross-sectional tertiary health care institution based prospective study was conducted on a sample of 100 patients diagnosed with AMD to know knowledge, attitude and practice among them. The overall KAP score assessment showed that 76% of subjects had poor knowledge and the proportion with average, good and excellent; overall KAP score was 4%, 20% and 5% respectively. The proportion of patients with good overall KAP score was higher in males (34%) as compared to females (15.1%). The proportion of subjects with good overall KAP score increased with better educational qualifications. The results also showed a better mean Health utility index mark 3(HUI 3) score in the grade I and II as compared to grade III and IV. The study revealed that the knowledge, attitude and practices have been found to be really poor in patients with AMD. This was due to illiteracy, lack of the facilities and proper care. Since AMD significantly affects the vision related quality of life (QoL), awareness about the use of low vision aids, dietary modifications may lead to better results.
