Journal Title: JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION AND PULMONOLOGY - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 31
Abstract
Rationale. Tuberculosis (TB) is a public health problem and one of the leading causes of death from infectious diseases worldwide. The purpose of our study is to assess the knowledge levels, attitudes and practices of the population on TB in Niamey. Method. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that took place in the month of July 2016 among the population of Niamey and concerned adults with mental disabilities. Results. Our sample consisted of 507 respondents with a sex ratio of 1.02 (in favor of men) and an average age of 40 years. In the Niamey population, 48.32% had a good general knowledge of TB and 47.14% had average knowledge. Half (52.51%) of those with average knowledge were non-educated. Knowledge about the main symptoms of TB (weight loss, cough, fever) was good. Knowledge was also good on sputum examination as a means of diagnosis (89.55%) and on anti-tuberculosis drugs (85.40%). Eighty-five point forty percent (85.40%) of respondents would support a person with TB and 40.83% of respondents preferred to isolate themselves from someone with TB. Conclusion. The population of Niamey had an acceptable level of knowledge about TB. To improve this deficiency, the focus should be on raising awareness among the population and this should involve health professionals through the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) and the Ministry of Public Health.
