Knowledge of asthma in patients praticing self-medication in Ouagadougou

Abstract
Introduction. Asthma is a chronic disease and self-medication become a common practice among asthmatic patients. Self-medication is not a good practice and it is necessary to ovoid it; this study help to determine the knowledge of asthmatic patients practicing self-medication in Ouagadougou. Methods. It is about a transversal study with descriptive and analytic purpose based on the conduct of an anonymous questionnaire. The study is focused on the subjects presenting themselves to the who targeted pharmacies of Ouagadougou without a prescription. Results. A total of 153 people were interviewed in Ouagadougou. The sex ratio was 1.73. The average age was 34.2±16.4 years. 57.5 % of the subjects had no revenue-generating activity. 52.94% had secondary school level. The mean duration of interviewees’ illness was 17.5±15.4 years with extremes of 1 and 80 years. 98% patients was diagnosed by a health worker, among these patients 70.6% of them were not followed for asthma. The last consultation was more than a year in 72.5% of patients. 71.2% of patients were familiar with the triggering factors and 79.7% had a good knowledge of the signs of their diseases. Breathlessness (93.5%) and wheezing (92.8%) were the main functional signs found. Bronchodilators with short duration of action were used in 95.4% of cases. Conclusions. Asthmatics, pharmacists and caregivers need discipline at all levels to protect the health of populations.
