Knowledge of oral health among Diabetic patients of Peshawar, Pakistan

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is considered as a risk factor for initiation and progression of oral diseases. Objectives: To assess the knowledge of oral health and care of oral hygiene among diabetic patients of Peshawar. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Patients included in the study were residents of Peshawar division, having more than half natural teeth in the mouth and had the disease for at least one year. The data of 250 diabetic patients were collected through pre-designed/pre-tested questionnaire. The major questions asked were regarding oral self care, dental visits and know how about the relationship between diabetes and the oral health. Results: Male to female’s ratio was 1.3: 1 in the current study. The mean + SD age was 50+5 years. The majority of the subjects (86 %) had type-2 diabetes. The frequency of toothpaste, brushing once in a day was observed in 57.2 % and two times per day in 18 % subjects. Only 44 % diabetics had visited the dentist within the past 6 months. Educated, young, females and newly diagnosed patients were found comparatively more careful regarding the oral health and dentist visit. Conclusion: The diabetic patients of this particular area have poor knowledge about oral complications of the disease which need special attention of the government agencies as well as health professionals to exploit the findings with further large scale studies in other areas of the country and so create an awareness program regarding this important issue.
