Lake of Amik and Fishponds in the XIXth Century

Abstract
The existence of the lake named after the plain in Hatay had been known since the ancient times until 1975, when it was dried. Lake Amik drew attention as a significant center of fishing till that date. The fact that fishing was realized both in the classical and modern times of the Ottoman State confronts us in tahrir documents. In this study the developments were handled, reflected from the fishponds and the fishpond holders, located on Lake Amik, to the 19th century documents. In addition due to these fishponds it is seen that the lake spreaded in the plain by overflowing and caused some diseases in the environment during the intensive winter rains and the periods that Asi River overflowed. On the lake fishponds of the people in the settlements located in the province of Aleppo and those acting as administrators and the existence of fifteen fishponds are known.
