LANDSCAPE SCIENCE AT THE INSTITUTE OF GEOGRAPHY OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE

Abstract
The purpose of the publication is to highlight the content of the basic researches of the Landscape Science Department of the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on certain areas in the context of its development from the time of its foundation till now and present their main results. During more than 50 years of the department’s work, researchers have gained significant and multi-dimensional results. The content of complex stationary studies of landscapes is substantiated, geophysical and geochemical criteria of parametric representation of their dynamics and functioning modes are determined. The theoretical and methodical principles of research of natural-territorial complexes, in particular, their mapping and creation of applied maps are worked out. Landscape study constituent of the constructive-geographical bases of rational nature management in different regions of Ukraine has been worked out, the scheme of natural-economic zoning of the territory of Ukraine has been substantiated. Small-scale paper maps «Landscapes of Ukraine» were created. The scheme of physical-geographic zoning is improved. The classification of natural and anthropogenically transformed landscapes has been developed on the basis of common criteria. The methodology and methods of medium-scale geoinformation mapping of landscapes has been worked out, the digital medium-scale map of landscapes of Ukraine (1: 500 000) has been created. The theoretical and methodological principles of the study of landscape diversity of the territory of Ukraine, the formation and development of the Ukrainian ecological network, the assessment of landscapes for the purposes of the main types of nature management, the State land cadastre, the expansion of the network of territories and objects of the natural-reserved Fund of Ukraine are deeply developed. The directions of optimization of nature management in the Ukrainian Polissya on the basis of the landscape-based approach are based. The factors of differentiation, structure, anthropogenic modifications and evolutionary changes of the landscapes of the Chernobyl zone are characterized, and the conditions and processes of radionuclide migration in these landscapes are evaluated. The European experience of landscape planning on the example of Cherkasy oblast on three spatial levels has been introduced, ways of integrating environmental requirements into territorial planning have been identified. A number of significant scientific results were obtained as a result of the implementation of international projects. The perspective direction of research of the department is the study of the current state of landscapes of Ukraine and the regularities of their changes on the basis of modern GIS technologies for solving applied problems.
