Abstract
The topic of the article is the role of the tree and the forest in the material culture of the Polish Middle Ages. The role of objects made of wood or coming from the forest in the artistic and spiritual culture of the Middle Ages is also taken into account. The considerations were based primarily on Dlugosz's Annals as the main source text, and on examples taken from the literature on the subject. The forest was shaped by the medieval society; higher and lower culture, sacral and secular.
