Laser biostimulation in the therapy of microvascular abnormalities in patients with Raynaud’s phenomenon

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 2

Abstract

Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) is a common clinical condition characterized by microvascular involvement and represents a key feature of several autoimmune diseases. Nailfold capillaroscopy is the best currently available technique to investigate the microcirculation in order to distinguish the functional, primary RP from the secondary form, associated other diseases. In case of limited effects of pharmacological treatment of RP, the complementary physical therapy attracted more and more attention.
The aim of the study was to assess the clinical effect of the therapy using laser biostimulation in 25 patients with RP. Clinical examination, the assessment of number of RP attacks per week and nailfold capillaroscopy were performed before and after 4 weeks of treatment. Laser biostimulation was performed five days per week for 4 weeks using laser scanner with frequency 1500 Hz, total energy per treatment 129 J and 2,5 minutes duration of one session.
After 4 weeks of laser biostimulation a decrease in the number of RP attacks per week was observed. In nailfold capillaroscopy an improvement of vascular flow, a decrease in the number of vessels with granular flow and reduction of interstitial oedema were found.
Laser biostimulation has positive effect on microcirculation in RP patients. Further investigations into the role of laser biostimulation in the treatment of microvascular abnormalities in patients with RP are needed.
