Learning a second language in theory and practice. A teacher's perspective on the importance of spoken language in a multilingual classroom

Abstract

The paper contains findings on teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The author of the article has a significant long-term experience of teaching in international schools as an ESL instructor and coordinator. Different cultural and linguistic backgrounds of students attending international schools provide a rich resource for teaching and learning, but also present a major challenge. The author argues that teachers need to recognize their role as offering expertise in the use of English. Children must learn language through language and learn about language (Halliday, 1980). The author shows through use of participant observation and research in action how interaction between participants of the learning/teaching process influences successful acquisition of English as a Second Language
