Learning Democracy in Schools: Experiences Towards an Active Citizenship Education
Journal Title: Theory and Practice of Social Systems Management - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
This article is based on the data gathered on the project Demoskole: Democracy, Participation and Inclusive Education in Secondary Schools2. The aim of this article is to explore what elements are needed to create initiatives for experiencing citizenship through participation in a secondary school context. The project was conducted in the region of Catalonia (Spain) in five secondary schools. The data gathered are interviews with principals, focus groups with students, teachers and families, and observations of practices identified as democratic. The results are organised under two key topics: a) the dimensions of democracy, which are: governance, understood as decision-making processes at schools; atmosphere, which regards the conditions that enable the entire educational community to feel welcome and comfortable at school; and otherness, related to normalization of and respect towards Others. b) democratic experiences. One of the contributions of this research demonstrates that the centres that organise their educational activities placing the student at the centre of the learning process promote greater democratic experiences.
