Leiomyoma of maxillary sinus-nasal cavity. A case report

Abstract

The leiomyoma is a benign tumor which arises from the smooth muscle fibers, and it is usually located in the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary tract, and a lot less in the upper respiratory tract. The leiomyoma of the maxillary sinus – nasal cavity is a rare neoplasm, which is seen in adults and with a female predominance. It occurs either as a polyp or mass which can occupy the maxillary sinus, the nasal cavity, or both together. It can cause nasal obstruction, epistaxis and even atypical facial pain. We report a case of a leiomyoma of the maxillary sinus – nasal cavity, who presented with reported toothache, edema in the ipsilateral cheek, exophthalmos, and reduced movement of the ipsilateral eye. The diagnostic approach and the treatment of the maxillary sinus – nasal cavity are also discussed in this case report.
