Length-weight relationship and condition factor of the smoothmouth marine catfish (Carlarius heudelotii) in the gulf of Guinea, Niger delta, Nigeria
Journal Title: Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
This study was conducted on the length-weight relationship of the smoothmouth marine catfish, Carlarius heudelotii, caught from the Gulf of Guinea by artisanal fishermen and landed at the Ukpenekang fish-landing site near Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The ‘r’ value for the 233 specimens of C. heudelotii sampled during the three months study period (April-June 2009) was 0.97. No significant difference in ‘R2’ (P>0.05) was noticed in the analysis of covariance between the fishes of different sizeclasses and sampling dates. The equation for length-weight relationship was W=1.02L2·4 for the overall sample. The overall condition factor was 1.29 (greater than one).

Preliminary aspects regarding the use of some invertebrate bioindicator species in the ecological study of an aquatic lotic ecosystem
Using invertebrate bioindicator species is one of the most important methodologies for evaluating the quality of the environment. The paper presents some data about monitoring studies, made during 1985-2008, with referen...
Review of the current status of systematics of gudgeons (Gobioninae, Cyprinidae) in Europe
Systematic of the gudgeons (Gobioninae) is one of the most dynamically evolving branches of the modern ichthyology. Newly implemented methods of molecular biology, modern species concepts (i.e. phylogenetic and evolution...
Disease resistance effect of sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) added in the fish diet.
In this paper, we approached a research theme regarding the effects of sea-buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides L. added in the diet the common carp Cyprinus carpio upon the disease resistance in case of the imminent disease o...
The effect of ascorbic acid on hatching performance and tolerance against environmental stressor (high temperature) by immersion of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) fertilized eggs
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of L-ascorbic acid (AA) in three levels (0,100, 1000 and 2000 mg L-1) on eyed egg and hatching rate, growth and viability of larva, and larval tolerance against high te...
The Pricopian «gene theory of sexuality» is just a hypothesis, but good enough to explain the sex determination in fish.
The present paper summarizes the Pricopian theory of sexuality, discussed in the context of fishes’ sex determination. On a logical approach and considering the most recent genetic evidences reported from studies on bact...
