Journal Title: REVISTA CHILENA DE ENTOMOLOGÍA - Year 2022, Vol 48, Issue 2

Abstract

Reports on injuries to human beings associated to the release of Carabidae defensive substances are infrequent. Herein we reported a case occurred in 2021 to a woman in Santiago, Chile, as far as we know, the first one reported in our country, in which a Notiobia cupripennis (Germar) (Carabidae: Harpalini) adult specimen was briefly trapped between her chest and the uncovered left thigh, causing her a locally burning sensation and acute pain. The injury evolved as a small chemical burning, as those caused by formic acid, the main component from Harpalini secretions. The injury almost disappeared after 25 days, with no permanent consequences to the affected person.
