Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction and the purpose of the study: Fear and depression are psychological factors shaping the reaction of female patients to surgical trauma. The objective of the study was determination of the level of anxiety and depression during the perioperative period, according to the category of surgical procedure in a group of women treated for gynaecological reasons.Materials and the methods: The study covered 232 women who received surgical treatment due to various gynaecological reasons. For the examinations, only women were categorised in whom no earlier psychic disturbances had been stated,. The research was conducted in two stages: on the day preceding the operation and in the third twenty-four hour period after the operation. The research was conducted using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck’s Depression Inventory. The findings obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Own examinations showed the lack of statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) between the level of anxiety and depression, and the category of the operation treatment in the group of women in the perioperative period. Conclusions: Women in the perioperative period had the highest level of anxiety and average level of fear-state, and a lack of depression or a minimum level of depression. The category of the operation treatment did not condition escalation of the states of anxiety and fear, nor the level of depression in the group of women in the perioperative period treated for gynaecological reasons.
