Diet in pregnancy and risk of birth defects
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 4
Abstract
Women planning or being in pregnancy should care about proper diet. It is important to avoid stimulants, which could be teratogenic and include adequate amounts of nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and fats, which are responsible for correct weight gain during pregnancy. A supply of specified amounts of micronutrients and vitamins is responsible for accurate growth and development of the fetus. It reduces the risk of birth defects and postdelivery complications. A specialist dietary treatment is required for pregnant women with diabetes or phenylketonuria because high level either glucose or phenylalanine in plasma exerts a deleterious effect on the embryo development.
