Level of lipid peroxidation in blood serum of patients with pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer

Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2007, Vol 14, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction: Experimental and clinical evidence have shown that oxidative stress is involved in development of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Oxygen radical production, which increases with clinical progression of pancreatic diseases, involves increased lipid peroxidation. The finał products of lipid peroxidation are high reactive compounds that are long-lived, diffusible and able to react with biologically important macromo-lecules in cells such as proteins and DNA causing their structural and functional damages. Aim of study: The aim of this study was to assess the level of lipid peroxidation in blood serum from patients with pancreatitis (acute and chronic) and with pancreatic cancer. Material and methods: Materials for this study were obtained from 20 patients with pancreatitis and 20 patients with pancreatic cancer (adenocarcinoma) diagnosed by routine histopathological examination. Blood was taken from the patients with pancreatitis before and after medical treatment.lt was also taken from the patients with cancer 1 day before cancer resection and 6 days after surgery. The control group consisted of 20 healthy blood donors. The level of lipid peroxidation was determined by estimating the concentration of the coloured product of the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances complex and expressed as malondialdehyde (MDA). Results: The level of MDA in blood serum of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis before medical treatment was significantly higher than in serum from healthy blood donors (p
