Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to assess physical activity (PA) among people with vision impairment through the use of a long version of the IPAQ questionnaire.Material and methods. The study was conducted in Poznan and covered 25 visually impaired people (17 women and 8 men) and 25 normally sighted people (14 women and 11 men) in accordance with the classification of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Mean age of subjects was 32.3 ± 5.3 years. PA measurement was carried out using the method of diagnostic survey A Polish long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-LF) has been used.Results. It was found that the energy expenditure associated with total physical activity does not differentiate visually impaired and normally sighted people (respectively 1870.6 ± 1221.1 MET-minutes/week vs. 2235.9 ± 1231.4 MET-minutes/week; p = 0,248). Visually impaired compared to sighted people have a much lower energy expenditure associated with moderate physical activity (respectively: 56.7 ± 177.7 MET-minutes/week vs. 463.2 ± 613.9 MET-minutes/week; p ≤ 0.001) and vigorous physical activity (respectively: 26.7 ± 130.6 MET-minutes/ week vs. 295.2 ± 524.1 MET-minutes/week; p ≤ 0.01) undertaken during their leisure time.Conclusions. It is necessary to encourage the promotion of physical activity among visually impaired people in their leisure time.
