Limitations of phantoms applied in tests of radiological apparatus

Journal Title: Inżynier i Fizyk Medyczny - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 6

Abstract

Tests of radiological devices are often carried out with use of phantoms - objects that simulate human tissue. The equivalence between material in phantom and tissue is usually limited only to some chosen features. In diagnostic radiology and radiotherapy phantoms are usually equivalent to tissues in terms of attenuation of radiation. However, it turns out that material which is water-equivalent for photon beams used in radiotherapy, can attenuate x-rays used in diagnostic radiology much stronger or much weaker than water. In some measurements not only attenuation is important, but also other effects, such as the intensity of backscattered radiation, or change of beam spectrum. Dimensional accuracy of the phantom may also be important. In some cases, even inaccuracies of nanometres may lead to noticeable differences in the results. The limitations of equivalence between phantoms and tissues should be considered when deciding of phantom application.
