Abstract
This article deals with the cognitive aspect of the reference regulation at the microlevel (within adjacent pairs). The cogni- tive mechanism of reference regulation includes a set of linguocognitive processes, operations and procedures. The cognitive process is the movement of human thought, aimed at understanding the objects, phenomena and events of the surrounding reality, in order to categorize knowledge about the world. We understand reference regulation as cognitive-communicative strategy. This strategy presupposes the usage of efficient language means to provide the effective communicative interaction and to achieve the necessary aim. Extracts from modern British and American literature serve as research material. The scientific methods of conversational analysis, contextual analysis and conceptual analysis have been used in order to single out linguo- cognitive procedures which provide the process of reference regulation. In this research mental space refers to the hypothetical environment of thinking and conceptualization, which reflects the mental state of affairs and is not projected into the imaginary world, but is actualized in the context of the cognitive interaction of the subjects of discursive activity with the world in the process of generating or perceiving the message. Mental spaces are structured by various mental schemes that are developed in the process of discourse analysis. These spaces exist in the human mind not as ready-made structures, but they arise every time in the process of generating discourse. Conceptual integration involves merging of two or more mental spaces in a mixed space. Subjects of discursive activity construe their utterances in order to achieve positive result of interaction. In this research cognitive operation of restructurization is brought into light. It was established that the reference regulation at the microlevel is provided by the linguocognitive operation of restructurization, which consists of linguocognitive procedures. By the proce- dures we understand sequential procedure for considering a particular phenomenon with the help of reasoning, explanation, obtaining conclusions through a thought experiment, distraction from some features of an object or phenomenon, identification, differentiation, omission or reduction of some of their features. As a result we have singled out the linguocognitive procedures of substitution, intensification, degree change, expansion, correction, contraction and contrast.
