ЛІНГВІСТИЧНІ ПЕРЕДУМОВИ ФОРМУВАННЯ АНГЛОМОВНОЇ ФОНЕТИЧНОЇ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТІ У КИТАЙСЬКИХ СТУДЕНТІВ-ФІЛОЛОГІВ

Abstract
Correct pronunciation is the key to further success in the English language mastery and communication. The insufficient level of phonetic competence of international students proves the necessity of extra efforts in the comparative phonetics research field. The understanding of the difference between the phonetic systems of English and Chinese provides the tools of language phenomena transference and leads to the conscious application of these tools in the process of teaching English to the Chinese students. Purpose. To establish the sources of transference and language interference on segmental and suprasegmental levels of English and Chinese with the aim of improving the level of phonetic competence of international students of philology. Methods. The following methods were used to conduct the research: study and analysis of scientific publications, comparative analysis. Results. The results of the study show that on the segmental level there can be distinguished groups of English sounds that are similar to the students’ native language, approximant, and the sounds that have no equivalents in Chinese. The first group of sounds can be used as direct aid in the English teaching process, while the second and the third groups need special attention on both the teacher’s and the student’s side. The analysis of prosodic features of English and Chinese discovers more sources of interference than transference. Conclusion. The results of the conducted research lead to the following conclusion. Comparative analysis of segmental and suprasegmental levels of English and Chinese allows to organize a more focused and effective selection of teaching strategies and materials to develop English phonetic competence. Further research in the field lies in the elaboration of teaching materials for international students that will provide successful development of English phonetic competence of future philologists.
