Lip symmetry in anterior crossbite evaluated from photographs
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Facial aesthetics, lip symmetry including, is a priorityin planning orthodontic treatment. AIM: to examine therelation between the unilateral crossbite limited to a singlecentral incisor and upper lip symmetry. MATERIALAND METHODS: The study comprised 26 children aged8-9, divided into: a study group (11 children) with a crossbiteincluding central incisor and a control group (15 children)with a normal anterior occlusion. Lip symmetry wasanalyzed on frontal face photographs. To enlarge the lowerhalf of the face the program Adobe Photoshop 6,0was applied. The upper lip border was drawn and thenumber of pixels in the marked area was evaluated. Outof five measurements made for every child by two examinersindependently, two extreme results were rejectedand the average was calculated. The mean numbers of pixelsfor the left and right sides of the upper lip were compared.Error of the method was assessed as intra- and interexaminerdifference in results obtained at different times. The results were analyzed statistically using the programstatistica pl. RESULTS: One examiner always receivedhigher values of measurements than the other, but the intraexaminer results were highly repeated. The difference ofmeasurements between the two sides of the upper lip in thecontrol group was on average 39,9 pixels, in the study group- 353,3 pixels. CONLUSIONS: A crossbite even limitedto a single central incisor results in marked asymmetryof the upper lip. The upper lip is smaller on the side of thecrossbite.
