LITERARY TEXTS ABOUT JOURNEYS IN GERMAN LANGUAGE LESSONS
Journal Title: Закарпатські філологічні студії - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Journey as a research theme exists in a number of areas of study such as geology, tourism geography, tourism, ecology, biology, economy, literature, sociology, pedagogy, didactics and of course didactics of foreign language teaching. The article shows the role of travel literature based on the example of a Vicki Baum’s chosen novel. In present days travelling, event to the most faraway places, is nothing extraordinary. However, the desire to explore other cultures is still one of the most frequently given reasons for leaving one’s own home. Lone journeys of women to the remote parts of the world were uncommon at the beginning of 20th century. Many women writers driven by the desire to learn and without any prejudices went to the wild areas of the world. Vicki Baum who in 1935 travelled to then unknown Bali was amongst those writers. Her literary account in the form of a novel Love and Death in Bali is marvelous as it shows the island yet untouched by the tourism industry. Literary creation is not only the artistic phenomenon, these texts also serve manifold functions in a didactic process. That is why the aim of this article is to show the possibilities of using literary texts during German language lessons for different level of students. This is more so as the reminiscences of these journeys were sometimes unfair, the discovered countries were considered backward. The possibilities arising from creative interpretation are a chance for a polemic with the views presented in the descriptions.
