Abstract
In this report some poetry texts of the collection The Big Bridge have been read and interpreted via two codes: Cinematic and Music, which are combined in the Intermediate code. The term «intermediate code» was introduced by Dick Higgins in 1966. In the literature, this term tends to be used to refer to the translating one language of art into another within the culture. The searching of codes and then decoding them is based on a comprehensive systems approach. It provides different methods, which then allow insight into the problem from different angles, in particular, from semiotic approach by Roland Barthes and Mikhail Bakhtin, and semiotics of cinema by Yuri Lotman and Sergei Eisenstein. The interpretation of poetry is based on researches by Kelvin Braun, Ulrih Vayshtain, Werner Wolff, and Steven Paul Scher. The study would have been more interesting if it had included parts of poetries, which are illustrations of theoretical concepts. However, in this paper, researcher has shown connection between music and literature in poetries: song 212, song 7, song 551 and, on the other hand, interpreted song 3, The Doll, song 5 to illustrate some techniques of Cinematic code. As this case very clearly demonstrates, it is important to read these texts as messages via intermediate code, because the reader could understand more deeply, what the author tried to say.
