Livelihood Issues of Odisha Migrants: A Study in Surat City

Abstract

It is a well known fact that migration is not merely a physical movement of people from one place to another; rather it has its social, economic, cultural dimensions as well. Surat is one of the most attractive cities in India in terms providing work for the migrants. The migrants from Orissa constitute as the second largest population in Surat city drawing an attention as the victims of many problems. The Orissa migrants come to Surat city in seek of jobs, hence, this situation raises few livelihood questions: their first need is to locate a source for their livelihood and hence the question of shelter is of secondary importance to them. The main purpose of the study is to develop in-depth understanding on the livelihood issues of Orissa migrants living in slum areas of Surat city. It is an empirical study as the researcher has opted descriptive study as the research design to explain the facts and problems of the migrants. The outcome of the study has introduced the magnitude of social problems of Orissa migrants living in slum areas of Surat city. Therefore, the study will help in developing an insight into the problems of the Orissa migrants and to develop intervention strategies by Surat Municipal Corporation, Government, Non-government Organizations, Private Sectors, to address the issues and minimize the problems of the migrants to certain level of extent.
