Lwowski "Głos Lekarzy" 1903-1914

Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2018, Vol 14, Issue 56

Abstract

The fate of this magazine is almost unknown. However, the information that was included in it appeared in various research works, concerning medicallygeneral issues or more detailed, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, related to Lwów and the local care system. The magazine under this title appeared for the first time on August 15, 1903. The creators and journalists maintained cooperation with the medical community, and as the later practice indicated, not only from Galicia itself, but also from all over Austria. In this way, it was planned to combine new ideas with real professional interests of the whole community, shaping its views in accordance with the slogan in the title: “Strength is in unity,.” Publications of “The Voice” were directed to the 1,500 medical community, mainly settled in Bukovina, Galicia and Silesia. Looking through the archival, hundred-year-long issues of this biweekly, one can certainly say that over a period of more than ten years, the editorial staff and individual authors tried to awaken the published professional and social consciousness of all the doctors there. Observing the reaction of the readers themselves, it can be added that its creators contributed not only to the consolidation of the environment but also the awareness (or at least part of it) of the role the doctor has to fulfill, especially in the difficult and neglected region of Galicia and beyond. “The Voice of Doctors” probably contributed to a certain improvement in the health issues of the inhabitants of these regions, and especially of the living conditions of the doctors themselves. However, the question remains: did the editorial office implement all its intentions? Through the years the magazine brought, in a sense, a response to these doubts, especially to the actions of the Great War, because they covered the scope of living and working doctors there. However, these issues and problems of the time should have been left to the next researchers of the Galician community of doctors of the early 20th century.
