Management of agroforestry systems in Tomé-Açu, Pará, Brazil: Using pruning residues

Journal Title: Revista Verde de Agroecologia e Desenvolvimento Sustentável - Year 2018, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

The use of agroforestry pruning wood emerges as a way of encouraging arboreal management in agroforestry systems (AFS) and as a source of raw material for artisans, giving greater visibility to the arboreal component. This study aimed to evaluate the use of pruning as a strategy for the management of AFS and in the manufacture of wood artifacts. The research was done on a property of the Association of Producers of Family Farming of the Municipality of Tomé-Açu, and with artisans of the Association of Artisans of the Amazon, from Belém-Pará. The data were collected on pruning of the arboreal component and on the understanding of sustainability in the use of pruning in the management of AFS, and in the manufacture of wood artifacts. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Agroforestry pruning generated 2.3 m3 of waste that was used for mulching and making of artifacts, so the use of pruning wood establishes itself as another product of Family AFS encouraging the management of trees, and creates a commercial channel between farmers and artisans. As a management strategy, pruning contributes to environmental, economic and socio-cultural sustainability. However, raising farmers' awareness of this practice depends on the knowledge about the benefits related to the sustainability of the systems.
