Abstract
This pa per exa mi nes the con cept of the de sti na tion in stra te gic to u rism de ve lopment. It will then lo ok at in ter na ti o nal best prac ti ce and how the SVP/ Hud son Mo del can be used as a tool to sha pe the plan ning, ma na ge ment and mar ke ting of to u rism de sti na ti ons. This analysis will in clu de a re vi ew of the cri ti cal suc cess fac tors from le ading de sti na ti ons and in par ti cu lar, the ro le of and need for in no va tion. The con cept of in no va tion in to u rism will be exa mi ned and exam ples of how in no va tion has been used in a ran ge of Euro pean de sti na ti ons will be con si de red in de tail. This will in clu de eviden ce from key sta ke hol ders, as well as analysis of the PR and me dia in te rest ge ne ra ted by an in no va ti ve ap pro ach to to u rism de sti na tion de ve lop ment. The pa per will exa mi ne key is su es such as bran ding and po si ti o ning, along with the im por tan ce of cle ar stra tegic plan ning, ha ving an ef fec ti ve de sti na tion ma na ge ment or ga ni sa tion and de li ve ring be ne fi ts to the host com mu nity. In an in cre a singly com pe ti ti ve mar ket pla ce the need for de sti na ti ons to ‘’stand out in a crowd” is es sen tial.
