MASS MEDIA AND MASS COMMUNICATION: CORRELATION OF CONCEPT

Abstract
In the article, based on the analysis of scientific literature and the norms of the current legislation of Ukraine, the means of mass communication and mass media are determined to be related. It is emphasized on their non-identities, since the means of mass communication are characterized by a large spectrum of mass media. It is stated that today the means of mass communication are in the environment of the appropriate communicative space and to a large extent due to the specifics of this space. Reproducing a certain picture, the situation, they act not only as a factor in the production, distribution and exchange of information, but also an appropriate form of organization of information and communication processes. Three main groups of functions of the means of mass communication are singled out: a) they satisfy the corresponding range of human needs as an individual as a person; b) satisfy the appropriate range of needs of social groups and a person as a member of the respective group; c) satisfy the appropriate range of needs in the whole society as an integral social system and a person as a member of this society. It was clarified that the formation and functioning of social groups according to their purpose in the absence of access to the mass media is practically impossible or significantly complicated. So, satisfying the needs of various social groups, the relevant the means of mass communication in the event of their fulfillment of the role of the democratic institution of society, which they assume in society as the “fourth branch of government”, must at least implement two key social functions. It is concluded that the activity of the means of mass communication can and should facilitate the constructive dialogue of various political forces in modern society, which would reduce the confrontational and activation of integration processes. If these tasks are performed in the activities of the means of mass communication, they respectively implement a very important social function – integration. Today, the means of mass communication are in an environment of a corresponding communicative space and to a large extent due to the specifics of this space.
